Author Interview with Felicity Heaton

Please help me welcome author Felicity Heaton to A Buckeye Girl Reads! Felicity is the author of a Kissed By A Dark Prince, book one in her new series Eternal Mates.

What are your favorite kind of heroines?
They have to be strong. I cannot stand reading about heroines who will let the hero walk all over her, and even do something with another woman (whether that’s drinking her blood or sleeping with her) after meeting her and realising he desires her, and will forgive them anything in a heartbeat, no matter how terrible it was or how they have treated her. I definitely don’t write that sort of heroine. My heroines would set the hero to rights for his bad behaviour and make him beg her to take him back or even think about being with him. I love a heroine who stands up for herself, has backbone and grit, and refuses to let her hero coddle her when it comes down to fighting and other dangerous things. I can safely say, my favourite kind of heroine is an alpha to the core, just like a girl should be in paranormal romance. She needs to be able to stand tall, tame her immortal hero and bring him to his knees, and give the bad guys hell.

Do you prefer alpha or beta heroes?
I prefer them alpha all the way, but in all honesty, I have a high preference for an alpha anti-hero. I love to write tortured heroes, men I have really put through the wringer emotionally, physically, and mentally. Some of my readers’ favourite heroes are my anti-heroes or the ones who are born to be very bad (read evil). The guys who are dangerous, a little bit crazed, and very broken, and have no interest in heroics. There’s something very appealing about a male on the edge, skirting the abyss. I think it makes us female readers dream of being the woman to pull them back from the brink and give them a reason to live.

Can you tell us about your newest series, Eternal Mates?
The Eternal Mates series is a spin-off from my Vampire Erotic Theatre series, and both of them are paranormal romance series. This one focuses on the broader world outside of the theatre in the original series and all the different fae, demon and supernatural species there, as well as a demon-hunting organization called Archangel.
Readers will get to adventure in fae towns hidden in our world, or in demon bars, and take trips into Hell where the dark elves live in their paradise-like kingdom and the seven powerful demon kings rule their grim realms, and often war with each other. Demons and elves aren’t the only immortal creatures living in Hell though. There’s the Devil and his loyal demons too, gods and goddesses, dark witches and fallen angels, dragon shifters and bear shifters, among others.
Kissed by a Dark Prince is the first book, and it introduces the dark elves, a race that are actually the forefathers of the vampires and who have little love for that species. It’s packed with passion and tension, and some seriously hot action, and I think all of the books in the series will be just as hot and passionate, and dramatic.

What's the hardest part about writing a series?
Consistency and bringing it to a close. I didn’t want to end the Vampire Erotic Theatre series, but it had to be done as I had written a book for every hero at the theatre. Because I loved playing in that world so much, I started to think about it all and everything I had revealed about it, and I came up with the Eternal Mates series. I love being able to play in that world again, and expand it too, revealing more about it to my readers.
Consistency with series is always a difficult thing. Not just because the readers’ responses to each book will be varied and you can’t please everyone with every book. Sometimes, it won’t hit their expectations. Every book can’t be better than the last. I think that’s impossible.
The hardest part about being consistent in a series is the small things. Like, remembering the eye colour of a certain species, or a trait they have that you mentioned in passing five books ago, and other things about the species, their society, powers, etc. Authors might forget these things because they’re writing a lot of different books for different series, but readers always remember everything. It pays to keep track of anything and everything that happens in your worlds!

What's the last best book you read?
It was Devil May Cry by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I had a reading-fest over the holidays. I don’t get to read as often as I would like because I can’t read while writing, so I always cherish the moments when I get to read. It was a good book and I would definitely recommend it and the entire Dark-Hunter series. I read the previous book in the series over the holidays too, together with books by Larissa Ione.

Do you have a favorite comfort read?
I’m trying to think of one. I like to go back to my roots occasionally and read the classic romances that I love the most: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Persuasion by Jane Austen, and North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell. It’s like escaping to a different time and I love reading those books that first introduced me to romance back when I was a teenager.

Hazy from his injuries, all he can focus on is the pulse ticking in her throat and the sweet allure of her blood. One single bite reveals she is his eternal mate, triggering a bond between them that will leave him weakened until it is complete… or broken, and pulling Olivia into the crossfire of his ancient feud. To protect his people and his mate from the machinations of a madman, Loren must risk everything by working with Olivia at Archangel to find a way to break the bond blossoming between them. But will Loren be strong enough to place duty before desire and give up the one thing he has waited millennia for and craves above all others—his eternal mate? And will Olivia be able to resist the incredible heat that burns between them and the temptation of her dark prince’s kiss?
