  Interesting Facts about Forged in Dreams and Magick
by Kat Bastion

·        The first three chapters and synopsis of an earlier version of Forged in Dreams and Magick was a finalist in five and winner of two contests for Best Paranormal Romance.
·        Forged in Dreams and Magick is in first person because experts advise new writers against writing in the tricky point of view. And a contest judge who awarded one win in Best Paranormal Romance said she doubted the story could be written where readers connect emotionally with two heroes over two time periods in 100,000 words.
{smiles slowly} My thoughts? Game. On. {laughs} I’m a contrarian who loves challenge.
·        At the 70% mark of the first draft, writer’s block descended. I took eight months off to read, relax, and write drafts in a series set to become a spin-off of Highland Legends.
·        The first scene written after my hiatus (a favorite scene) is when Skorpius is first introduced. While drafting, I knew an incredible event happened there, but all my mind literally saw was white mist. I marked a space for the scene and continued writing. The white mist later became a part of the world, the scene materializing from its iridescence. The entire passage was typed in a three-hour afternoon and is 95% intact from original draft. I vibrated so hard with excitement after finishing, I felt like I’d consumed a gallon of espresso. What a phenomenal induction back into the story!
·        Once Skorpius’s scene was written, the entire series shifted and clicked into place as a richer, more complex paranormal world.
·        Brodie Castle in our thirteenth-century story is not the Brodie Castle in existence today.
·        As I researched a name for Drust’s wife, intuition screamed she had to be Egyptian, so I searched compelling names from ancient Egyptian empires. Two hours later—yes I’m that particular about names—I blinked hard in disbelief, staring at the name Scota. I then immediately immersed myself into the legend behind why Scotland is so named. {grins}
·        Velloc’s name, Dotan’s, and the few words of their language are from my imagination, formed by analyzing known Pict names from the Pictish Chronicle’s list of kings.
·        Other names, including Drust (Drest), Talorcan, and the Pictish tribal names, are all true Pict names from historical record. However, no Pict documentation exists from the ancient time depicted in Forged in Dreams and Magick.
·        Skorpius’s appearance (and the angels and their hidden story line) beautifully ties the Highland Legends Series to my modern-day assassin series. Two fully drafted, back-shelved novels now have a greater purpose and will be retooled into a paranormal/urban fantasy spinoff series immediately following the Highland Legends Series.
