Review: Unholy Magic by Stacia Kane

Title: Unholy Magic
Author: Stacia Kane
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Series: Downside Ghosts #2

I have a crush on this guy named Terrible. He's not your typical hero-but then the heroine in this series, Chess Putnam isn't your typical heroine. She happens to have this little problem with drugs. They keep getting her into trouble...but I'm getting ahead of myself.  Unholy Magic is book two in the Downside series by Stacia Kane. In book one we learned that in 1999 the ghosts went crazy, and killed most of the worlds population in an event that is known as Haunted Week. In the aftermath, major religions and governments fell away, and what was left was the Church of the Real Truth. They control everything-magic, law enforcement, world order. Chess works for the church and is a sanctioned witch. She works as a debunker. Think of the show Ghost Hunters, and you have her job. The church promised people that ghosts wouldn't bother them any more, and if they have a haunting in their home, the church pays them a lot of money, so they send in people to disprove the hauntings.

After her case in book one, Chess has caught the attention of the church elders, and they've given her a great case~prove that a tv star is faking his own haunting.  Her little drug problem has gotten her into a situation she can't get out of, and agrees to investigate a case of hookers being murdered for her drug dealer, Bump.  Everyone thinks it's a ghost killing the girls, but Chess isn't so sure-the case is complicated because there is magic, sex, and the supernatural involved.  To prove that she's right she some how gets in the middle of a crazy guy, oh and the two guys in her life-Terrible and Lex find out about each other, and it's not pretty...How did her life get so complicated?

Reading this book was like riding a roller coaster. You never knew what direction it would turn next, or what twists and turns were right around the corner. It was full of gut wrenching emotional ups and downs. In this book we learn more about Chess-and what made her into the person she is today. We also learn a bit more about Terrible, and how there is another side to him that he doesn't let very many people see. This series, and especially a guy named Terrible has totally captured my heart. As Hanging With Bells says: "I gots Terrible Fever. " Join me tomorrow for a Stacia Kane Guest Post!
