What's on your desk Wednesday

I know today's Saturday, and not Wednesday but I had a camera malfunction and couldn't do the challenge until now. In typical fashion I dropped my camera on the way to take the picture of my desk, and it kept saying "lens error." It took multiple times of taking the batteries out to finally get the camera working again.

Here are the rules of this meme, from which I was tagged by Heidenkind.

1. Grab a camera and take a photo of your desk! Or anywhere you stack your books/TBR pile. And no tidying!
2. Add this photo to your blog.
3. Tag at least 5 people!
4. Come back here and leave a link back to your photo in the comments section.

That's it. However, for those without digital cameras or blogs of your own, you can do this instead: (or both if you are keen!)

1. List at least 5 BOOKISH things on your desk (I'm thinking your TBR pile or books you haven't shelved...)
2. List at least 5 NON BOOK things. (I'm thinking some of some of the more unusual items on your desk/table?)
3. Tag at least 5 people to do the same.
4. Come back and leave your link, so we can come and visit your blog. Or add your answers in the comments.

Feel free to grab the above picture to place on your blog - as a way of showing you are participating, and of course to spread the word! Have fun!

I don't actually have a desk..my computer desk is so small that it barely fits my computer monitor and speakers on it, so my coffee table makes do as my desk. Here's a picture of it:

The books:

His Wicked Kiss by Galen Foley-I read this last week, but still haven't put it away yet. Eden was raised in a South America jungle by her father, but wants to get back home to London. But alas, her father, a scientist/doctor wants to stay in the jungle. When Jack Knight appears Eden begs him to let her go with him back to London. He says no. She stowes away on his ship. They fall love. They grow distant. They fall in love again. Not a bad book, but it had super cheesy lines.

The Aporthecary's Daughter by Julie Klassen-I accidentally found this Christian book at the library. I thought it was one of my normal historical romances till I saw the "Christian" tag on the spine of the book when I got home. From the back of the book: It's about a girl name Lily who works in her fathers Apothecary shop and is haunted by memories of her mothers disapperance. She gets an offer to have a season in London and jumps at the chance to go..she can have a chance at love and find out what happened to her mother. (this one is still waiting to be read.)

Touch Me By Lucy Monroe- Thea is raised in the exotic West Indies (yes, I have a thing for exotic places...)and is everything a lady shouldn't be-outspoken, and opinonated. These are two things that make her stand out from the other ladies that Pierson Drake knows. (Because we all know how boring the ladies of the ton are...) They fall in love on the way to London, but both have secrets that threaten to tear apart their love for each other once they reach London. Will their love survive the ballrooms of the ton? I was hoping to recapture magic that I found when I read by Moon Awakening by the same author and failed. It was still a pretty good book from what I remember, but no where as good as the first book I read by Lucy Monroe.

Here Today Gone to Maui by Carol Snow- After the cheesy lines in His Wicked Kiss, I opted for a mystery to read. This was another book I found by chance at the library. When Jane Shea's boyfriend Jimmy invites her to go Hawaii on vacation she doesn't expect for him to go missing. This was a cute, fast read. It's a story that's been done a hundred times before, but the characters while slightly annoying and predictable make for a good time.

Water for Elephants by Sara Guen- I'm re-reading this for a book club I host on another blog site. I adore this book! It's so not my style of literature, but I couldn't put it down. I'm not sure how to describe this without giving away the ending, so I'll just say it's a tale for all ages with many subplots to explore.

Interred with their Bones by Jennifer Lee Carroll-A cryptic clue, a lost manuscript, murders based on Shakespeare's play, a possible Howard plot-what more could you want in a book? Maybe some action? Ok. that's not fair..there is a lot of action, but also a lot of down time..when the action does happen, it's the same-murder, escaping, figuring out a clue to the lost manuscript. I have about 50 pages left to go with this book, and I think it could've ended with 300 pages instead of 400. It's pretty good, and I still haven't quite figured out everything yet, but the storyline is new to me, and I desperately needed a change from romance.

Non Book Items:

1. Can of Coca-Cola. Some people have a beer or a cup of coffee to unwind after a long day work, I have a can of Coke. :) One's almost always on my coffee table.

2. Bath and Body Works Vanilla Noir lotion. I love the smell of this vanilla. I got it for a Christmas gift, and the darker, deeper scents of vanilla are soothing.

3. Flashlight- For Christmas my mom got my sisters and I one of the flashlights that you don't need batteries for. It's pretty darn cool. We've been having a lot of thunderstorms lately, so I've had it handy in case of power failure.

4. Kleenex-Some time during my many colds this winter I found it handy to have a box of Kleenex in my apartment. Out of laziness I've put them on the coffee table.

5. Remote Control-I am in love with my DVR. I don't think I could go back to basic cable...I'd be lost the info and guide keys on my remote.

I didn't tag anyone, as I'm just getting started on blogger...

Take A Chance Challenge

Take A Chance Challenge. This challenge is all about taking chances in your reading. There are 10 tasks in all -- 7 involve finding a book to read in very random ways. The last three tasks are about taking chances as a writer as you are challenged to take on the role of short story writer, poet and movie/book reviewer. The challenge is meant to be fun and no pressure. Complete as many or a few of the 10 challenges as you want. However, the more you complete, the more chances you'll get to win the grand prize. Here are the details:

Random Book Selection. Go to the library. Position yourself in a section such as Fiction, Non-Fiction, Mystery, Children (whatever section you want). Then write down random directions for yourself (for example, third row, second shelf, fifth book from right). Follow your directions and see what book you find. Check that book out of the library, read it and then write about it. (If you prefer, you can do the same at a bookstore and buy the book!)
--Still need to do this one :)

Random Word. Go to this random word generator and generate a random word. Find a book with this word in the title. Read the book and write about it.

My word was Muddle. The only book I could find that wasn't a Children's book was:Roanoke Rock Muddle by Lucia Peel Powe.

Birth Year Book. Find a book that was published or copyrighted in the year of your birth. Read the book and write about it.

I was born in 1972. The book I have chosen to read is Flame and The Flower by Kathleen Woodiwess. She's described as the mother of modern romance, and I can't believe I haven't read this book before now.

Judge A Book By Its Cover. Pick out a book based SOLELY on the cover. First, write about what you expect the book to be about based on the cover art. Then read the book and write about how the book was different from and/or similar to what the cover art led you to expect.
--Still need to do this one. :)

Phoning An Author. Pick a random last name out of the phone book. Find an author with the same last name and read a book by them. Write about it. (I'm flexible ... if the first random name you pick is Xprxyrsss, you can pick again!)
--Still need to do this one. :)

Public Spying. Find someone who is reading a book in public. Find out what book they are reading and then read the same book. Write about it.
--Still need to do this one. :)

Random Bestseller. Go to Random.org and, using the True Random Number Generator, enter the number 1950 for the min. and 2008 for the max. and then hit generate. Then go to this site and find the year that Random.org generated for you and click on it. Then find the bestseller list for the week that would contain your birthday for that year. Choose one of the bestsellers from the list that comes up, read it and write about it.

The Year I got was 1991. My birthday is August 29, and I was so tempted to choose Perfect by Judith McNaught (I love that book!) or Texas! Chase by Sandra Brown, but I chose instead The Sum of All Fears by Tom Clancy. I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't read a Clancy novel before.

Lit Riff (inspired by the book Lit Riffs by Matthew Miele.) Choose a song and then write a brief story that is inspired by or further explains the lyrics of the song.
--Still need to do this one. :)
Poetic Review. Write a book review in three different forms of verse: haiku, limerick and free verse. (You can pick any book you want to write about.)
--Still need to do this one. :)
Movie/Book Comparison. Find a book that you haven't read that has a movie based on it that you haven't seen. Read the book and watch the movie within a few days of each other. Write about your reactions to both the book and the movie and compare the two.

This is a hard one! Right now I'm torn between: Sideways, The Second Summer of the Sisterhood (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, book 2) Angels & Demons by Dan Brown, The Reader, P.S. I love You, Atonement and last but not least: love in the time of cholera

--I forgot to mention that I found this challenge through Heidenkind :)

Through The Veil by Shiloh Walker

Through the Veil Through the Veil by Shiloh Walker

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
I enjoyed this book much more then I thought I would. When I opened the book and saw glossary terms, my heart sank. However the book quickly grew on me, until about halfway through the book when I thought everything had been given to the reader, but not the character. I was presently surprised at the end that I didn't have everything figured out-although I should have! I can't wait to read other books by this author. :)

Empty Bookshelves

Is there a greater sight then empty bookshelves? I don't think that there is. I have five empty shelves waiting to be filled.

There are books waiting to be placed in their new home. So many questions waiting to be answered.

Shall I shelve them in alphabetical order? By favorite authors? Favorite books? Waiting to be read? By size? Or in the order that they were bought?

There are so many options waiting for me. I can't wait to get started organizing!

This book had such good potential. Interesting characters, good storyline, chemistry between the two main characters, but there was still something missing. I just can't put my finger on what was missing.

Tuesday Teaser

Tuesday Teaser is a book meme hosted by Should Be Reading whom I found through Jenn's Bookshelf

Just do the following:

* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I'm currently reading Footloose by Leanne Banks.

Page 216: "I don't care if he looks like Shrek, this is a once in a lifetime experience. Buck up and move on. I'll even do your hair, he offered."

His Wicked Kiss

His Wicked Kiss (Knight Miscellany, #7) His Wicked Kiss by Gaelen Foley

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
The beginning of the book was fabulous. The middle of the book was much too long and almost did me in. The ending made up for the middle and did a lot for redeeming this book for me. I didn't realize until I finished the book that this was the last book in a series, so it made sense as to why there were so many characters from other books featured and other story lines going on at the same time.
